Collaboration strengthens the apple sector
The South Tyrolean apple sector has a new, strong alliance: the producer organizations VOG, VIP, and VOG Products have founded "alpoma," a new Association of Producer Organizations (APO) aimed at strengthening collaboration in key areas such as varietal innovation, research, development, and environmental measures.
The founding of APO alpoma was announced by chairmen Georg Kössler (VOG), Thomas Oberhofer (VIP), and Johannes Runggaldier (VOG Products) on March 27, 2025. Despite the new cooperation, VOG, VIP, and VOG Products will maintain their independence and identity.
Among the main tasks of alpoma is the coordination of research and management of new apple varieties, as well as the promotion of research and development projects for the South Tyrolean fruit growing sector in collaboration with the Laimburg Research Centre. Environmental measures will also be strengthened through the expansion of renewable energy sources, the implementation of water treatment systems for sustainable resource use, and other innovative solutions to optimize production processes. Furthermore, the APO will intensify collaboration in investments, particularly in the area of processed products managed by VOG Products.
The name alpoma was chosen to highlight the connection between the Alps and apples (poma).
The APO alpoma, together with its member organizations VOG, VIP, and VOG Products, represents a production volume of approximately one million tons of apples, grown by over 6,000 producers on an area of approximately 18,000 hectares.
